When does the new policy wording dated effective 3 February 2026 come into force?

The new policy wording will apply for all trips departing New Zealand on or after 3 February 2026.

What if I am overseas on 3 February?

If you have departed New Zealand before 11.59pm on 2 February 2026, the new policy won’t apply to your trip. Do remember to check your cover before leaving though to make sure your trip will be covered.

What if I have already completed the online cover check for my travel departing after 3 February?

  • If your trip does not include snow sports, or a multi-night cruise then your existing cover confirmation is still valid and you don’t need to do anything. But the policy link sent to you by email as part of your cover confirmation will be incorrect and not applicable for your travel.  Please  check that you have a copy of the correct policy wording that applies to your trip effective for travel from 3 February that can be found [here].

  • If your trip, starting on or after 3 February, includes a multi-night cruise as part of your itinerary, then your online cover certificate is no longer valid and you will need to arrange a new policy. You will not have cover for any part of your trip if your itinerary includes a multi-night cruise, unless you purchase the additional Cruise Cover add-on. You can call us on 0800 269 872 to arrange a refund of any premiums paid for the original cover.

  • If your trip, starting on or after 3 February, includes skiing or snow boarding then your trip as a whole will still be covered, but you will no longer be covered for the activity of skiing or snow boarding unless you purchase Snow Sports Cover. Please arrange a new policy if you need to cover skiing or snowboarding. You can call us on 0800 269 872 to arrange a refund of any premiums paid for the original cover.

When will I be able to arrange cruise and snow sports cover?

Applications for cruise and snow sports cover will be available online from 3 December 2025.

Snow Sports

What types of skiing and snow boarding is covered?

  • If you purchase Snow Sports cover then skiing and boarding within the marked boundaries of commercially operated skifields will be covered.
  • There is never any cover for racing, race training, tricks, stunts, or any skiing or snowboarding outside marked ski field boundaries including terrain accessed by helicopter or snowcat.

How do I arrange cover for snow sports?

Enter your trip details on the check your cover page after 3 December 2025 and simply tick the box for snow sports.

What if I don’t want this cover?

If you choose not to arrange cover for snow sports cover, the rest of your trip will still be covered, you just won’t be covered while you are skiing or snow boarding. Skiing injuries can be expensive, so you should carefully consider your requirements before deciding to ski or board without cover.

Can I apply for snow sports cover if I am already overseas?

We encourage all travelers to complete their insurance arrangements before leaving New Zealand. If you weren’t able to do so (or if you didn’t know you were going to visit a ski resort) please call us.  In some circumstances, we might be able to add this option for you but we do not guarantee approval.

Cruise Cover

What counts as a cruise?

Cruise means travelling as a passenger for two or more nights, inclusive of port stops and cruise excursions, aboard a commercially registered cruise ship which sails on a river, in a harbour, on an ocean or at sea during your journey.

How do I purchase cruise cover?

  • Enter your trip details on the check your cover page after 3 December 2025 and simply tick the box for cruising.
  • You will need to know the total cost of your cruise (including any options such as meal packages and shore excursions that are pre paid before boarding) as we use this to calculate the premium that will apply. Use the total cost for you, and your spouse and/or your dependent children if they are traveling with you.

Can I purchase cruise cover if I am already overseas?

We encourage all travelers to complete their insurance arrangements before leaving New Zealand. If you weren’t able to do so (or if you didn’t know you were going to be taking a cruise) please call us.  In some circumstances, we might be able to add this option for you but we do not guarantee approval.

What if I don’t want this cover

  • If you are taking a cruise but you choose not to arrange cruise cover, then there is no cover for any part of your trip.
  • We recognize that short cruises do not have the same risk as longer cruises, and they are usually less expensive. This is why we ask for the cost of the cruise and charge a lower premium for cheaper cruises.

Policy excess

What is the policy excess for accepted claims?

The policy excess for accepted claims will increase from $200 to $300. This excess is charged per event, not per person, or per claim. This means that if more than one person affected by an event, or if the event causes claims against more than one benefit (such as a medical and cancellation) then only one excess will apply.

Domestic Rental Vehicle Collision Damage and Theft Excess Cover

Why is this benefit being removed?

Many customers were choosing to travel domestically when borders were closed due to Covid-19. Fewer customers need this benefit now as they are able to travel internationally and we are focused on making sure that the international travel cover is prioritised.

What if I have already rented a car with the rental period starting on or after 3 February 2026?

The domestic rental benefit will not longer apply after 3 February so if you need to arrange a lower excess, you will need to ask your rental provider for options.

What it I am halfway through a rental period on 3 February 2026?

If you collect your rental vehicle before 3 February 2026 then the policy wording that includes Domestic rental benefit will still be effective for your trip. Meaning you will still enjoy the benefit up to the end of the rental period (even if that is on or after 3 February 2026).
